Notes for John Holt IBBETSON
Well-known geometrician and inventor. Trustee of the Trevalyn Estate.

Author of”Specimens in Eccentric Circular Turning”. This book went through many editions and printings between 1817 and 1851. Still in reprint. Also A brief account of Ibbetson's Geometric Chuck, manufactured by Holtzapffel & Co 1833 and A practical view of an invention for the better protecting bank-notes against forgery .

Ibbetson's family had been lathe-makers in the eighteenth century, and John Ibbetson had developed a new eccentric chuck. It drove a cutting tool through preset sequences of cuts, each a bit different from the last, until it returned to a starting point. The output was an elaborate and quite lovely decorative carving. These carvings took forms that might resemble snowflakes, or maybe fancy tile-work. Today, chaos theorists generate somewhat similar patterns -- although theirs never return to a starting point. Ibbetson's interest was completely ornamental. He illustrated his book with copperplate engravings that he'd carved directly with lathes, equipped with his eccentric chucks.
