Notes for Edward Lennard CHUTE
Trooper in Matabeleland Mounted Police 1897-1901; on 4 September 1902 was appointed Assistant District Commissioner in what later became Nigeria, working initially at Calabar; on 1 January 1908 was appointed Commissioner of Police; worked in Warri then left Nigeria. South African War Medal and Clasp.

Appointed to a temporary commission as Captain, West Riding Regiment on 13 September 1914. He worked in Divisional Transport and trained at Roehampton in aerial observation (from balloons). He worked with the French Flying Corps in Egypt and wanted a career (in balloons) with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) but, despite apparently having been employed as a Balloon Company Commander, was deemed to be unfit medically for General Services in the RFC, and unsuitable for employment as an instructor in balloon work on the ground. He relinquished his commission on account of poor health, including heart problems, on 28 November 1917

By the 1930s, it appears that he returned to the area where he had been in the Matabele Mounted Police, since in September 1935 he applied for a grant of £22 from the Officers Department of the British Legion to help him return from England to his home in Northern Rhodesia (as Zambia was then callled). He died in 1949, presumably in Northern Rhodesia, where he worked as a tobacco planter. He apparently married again after leaving Dorcas Etie, mother of Diana Alicia, and returning to England in 1914 but appears to have had no other known children. Described as Tobacco planter in Burke’s.
