From a family of Pudsey grocers. Later trained with William Cussons in Hull and then Managing Director of Cussons which evolved post the 2nd World War into an early chain of supermarkets. Played the cello with Hull Philharmonic Orchestra. Lived in Victoria Avenue. Servants. Weslyan Methodist family. Worked his way up from “shopman” (in 1871 census)
